Point and Shoot.
I take all of the photos on my site and blog with a Nikon D70 digital camera and while I like it very much for shop and studio shots it’s more than a bit too large to fit in a jersey pocket to take out on a ride. Well I went for a ride around the flat part of the valley close to the house yesterday and right as I was getting ready to shove off I asked to barrow Karin’s little point and shoot camera. I’m always a bit lost with this thing and feel like I’m doing something wrong and they way I make up for it is to take some many photos that I’m bound to get one or two that don’t suck. Well yesterday was so perfect and sunny and warm it was hard to go wrong. As you read awhile back I was whining about out wet weather but now I can reap the benefits of it – it is so green it almost hurts your eyes. It’s that kodachrome green from film camera days gone by and just stunning to look at.
I thought you might like to see what my ride looks like when it’s green in spring.

You musta said something to upset the cows.
Looks like super riding, Dave.
It’s funny – they were sleeping so peacefully until I rolled up and then one stood up and came quickly toward the fence and the others all went on guard. Not usre what I said but they didn’t like it.

Tell us about the custom shoes. Also, are those 25mm tires you’re running on dirt roads (you’re a tougher guy than I am . . . but that isn’t news). Or are you just building up to unveiling the Kirk mountain bike line?
The shoes – the shoes are some of the best money I’ve ever spent on cycling in the last 30 years – they are D2 customs. I don’t recall what they cost but I seem to remember their not being much more than Sidis with the added benefit that they actually fit my odd and broken feet. I have two different sized feet and very high arches that many out of the box shoes won’t wrap over. I tried other customs (Rocket 7) and they were just OK. I got the D2s about 3 years ago and they kick butt. They fit so well closing the straps on top seems like a formality. I highly recommend D2. With a shoe that fits the way it should you are more comfortable and more efficient and with a seriously light shoe the pedals spin up just that much faster.
The tires – I’m using Schawlbe Ultremos in a 700 x 25 and love them. I do ride dirt quite often and as long as the dirt is hard packed they work very well. In lose stuff they suck like every other road tire but on hard pack they fly. I run 100 psi in the rear and 90 psi in front and I weigh 180 lbs. I’ve only had them for this season so I don’t know how well they will wear but I suspect they will wear just fine. I certainly like the ride and the turn-in. Another highly recommended product.
Don’t hold your breath on the Kirk MTB line…….. call Carl Strong and he’ll hook you up.
Thanks for the question.
