Pin Stripes.

There are a few different terms used when talking about what I call ‘pin stripes’. Some call it ‘lug lining’ – some call it ‘shorelining’………what ever you call it it’s damn hard to do well and when poorly done it can really take away from the look of a bike………..but when done well they are something to behold.

My painter Joe Bell (i.e. JB) knows pin stripes. I’m not quite sure how he gets them to be so even in width and so round and flowing but he fricken nails it each and every time. I’ve asked him a few times how it’s done and I’m not sure I fully understand the process but each time he’s explained it it starts with – “I wait for everyone to leave the shop at the end of the day, crack open a good beer and……….”. You get the idea.

I thought I’d take a few close ups of the pin stripes in the outdoors today in the wonderful diffused fall afternoon light and share them. I then took some indoor shots that show the overall bike a bit better. So you’ll see one frame in two different settings. Anyway you cut it those are some seriously tight lines.

Thanks JB.

Dave

That’s a stunning piece of fabrication – kudos to the both of you – did you fillet the valleys in the BB lug?
